The Brisbane Bullets are thrilled to announce Taane Samuel has signed a Development Player contract with the club for the 2021/22 Hungry Jack’s NBL Season.

Samuel is one of New Zealand’s top young prospects and is coming off a championship winning campaign with the Wellington Saints in the NZNBL. The 22-year-old played a pivotal role in the Saints’ championship, averaging 16.5 points per game. He has also played for the Manawatu Jets in the NZNBL from 2019-2020.

Samuel has represented New Zealand at international level in junior age groups, including playing for them at the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup.

Brisbane Bullets Head Coach James Duncan said: “I’m excited to have Taane onboard. He just finished a successful season with the Wellington Saints, where he played a vital role in bringing home a championship.

“The coaching staff and management see plenty of potential in Taane. At his age, it’s hard to find a Development Player with his skill set and toughness. We’re looking forward to seeing Taane grow and contribute to our group.”

Samuel said: “I am so grateful to the Brisbane Bullets for giving me my first NBL opportunity and I am so excited to get on the court with my new teammates.

“Playing in the NBL has always been a goal of mine and I want to prove that I belong in the world’s best basketball league outside of the NBA.

“I think Coach Duncan has a fantastic vision for the club and I’m willing to do whatever I need to do to ensure the Bullets have success this upcoming season.”

Brisbane Bullets GM of Basketball Sam Mackinnon said: “We are delighted to sign Taane as our first Development Player for NBL22.

“He was recently named in the All Star Five of the NZNBL where he showed his high basketball IQ along with a balance of size, athleticism and strong three-point shooting.”

Samuel joins Lamar Patterson, Isaiah Moss, Deng Deng, Jack Salt, Jason Cadee, Anthony Drmic, Tyrell Harrison, Tanner Krebs, Nathan Sobey and Tamuri Wigness on Brisbane’s roster for the 2021/22 Hungry Jack’s NBL season.
