The Brisbane Bullets and TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport have joined forces to deliver an exciting and innovative TAFE at School program specifically designed for senior high school students with a passion for basketball. This program offers a unique opportunity for student-athletes to combine their senior studies with nationally recognised qualifications in sport.

Students have the flexibility to enrol in either one or both years of the program. The course is open to male and female current high school students in Years 10, 11, or 12.

In Year 1, students will complete a Certificate II in Sport Coaching, gaining foundational skills in coaching principles, communication, and leadership—essential for those looking to support others in sport or kickstart their own coaching journey.

In Year 2, students will progress into the Certificate III in Sport (Athlete), where they will further develop their athletic performance through structured training, game preparation, and athlete wellbeing. Delivered in partnership with the Brisbane Bullets, the program gives students rare access to a professional sporting environment, where they can learn firsthand from industry experts and elite-level coaches.

This pathway prepares students for a wide range of future opportunities—whether as a developing athlete, an aspiring coach, or a future leader in the sports industry.

What’s the Program About?

The program is tailored for senior high school students with a passion for basketball at any skill level – however is particularly those competing at regional, state, or national levels.

Over two years, student-athletes will have the opportunity to complete the two nationally recognised qualifications:
• Certificate II in Sport Coaching (SIS20321)
• Certificate III in Sport – Athlete (SIS30421)

The classes blend classroom-based theory with hands-on, practical learning in a professional sporting environment. Students will participate in basketball-specific skills development, strength and conditioning sessions, and athlete-focused workshops, all designed to build their capabilities both on and off the court.

Take part in an exciting live event experience at a Brisbane Bullets NBL game—whether through pre-game activations, half-time appearances, or community engagement opportunities.
• Guest speakers from across the Brisbane Bullets organisation
• Hear from experienced professionals across a range of sporting roles—from elite coaches and sports scientists to administrators and former athletes—offering inspiration and insight into various career paths.
• Foundation-level basketball coaching accreditation
Students will work towards gaining an entry-level basketball coaching qualification, helping build confidence, leadership skills, and opening doors to casual coaching opportunities in schools, clubs, or community programs.

Completing these qualifications can significantly contribute to both the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).​

QCE Credits:
• Certificate II Qualifications: Successfully completing a Certificate II qualification can earn students up to 4 credits towards their QCE. ​
• Certificate III: These higher-level certificates can contribute up to 8 credits to the QCE.

The program is open to high school students in Years 10, 11, or 12 who have a genuine passion for basketball and a strong desire to grow their skills both on and off the court. Whether you’re an aspiring athlete, an emerging coach, or simply interested in building a future in the sports industry, this program offers the perfect combination of hands-on training and nationally recognised qualifications.

The Certificate II in Sport Coaching (SIS20321) may be funded under the Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) program for eligible students. As VETiS funding can only be used once for a qualification at each level, we encourage students and parents to carefully consider their training and career goals before enrolling.

Applications for the Brisbane Bullets TAFE at School Program will formally open mid-year within the TAFE application portal. Once open, applications can be made through www.tafeapply.com and by using the code TQB2601.
