The Brisbane Bullets showed a lot to like and dug deep to force the game to overtime but ended up going down at home to the Tasmania JackJumpers.
The Brisbane Bullets again made a standout start, then showed tremendous character to fight back from a double-figure deficit, but in the end the Tasmania JackJumpers responded in overtime for the 109-99 win.
The Bullets were back home at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday night trying to bounce back from their first loss of the season on Wednesday to the Sydney Kings and to stay undefeated in Brisbane for NBL27.
The Bullets opened a 14-point lead in the second quarter and still led by seven at half-time, but the JackJumpers took over with 34 points in the third frame, including a 13-0 run.
Tasmania were then up 11 themselves in the fourth but Brisbane fired back with 11 straight points and even found themselves in front before the game ended up going to overtime.
It was in the extra period where the JackJumpers had 18 points to eight for the Bullets to now be 2-2 on the season, but it was still a performance in front of the home fans with plenty to be encouraged by.
Tyrell Harrison had a fascinating match up between perhaps the two best local centres in the league with Will Magnay and did another power of work for the Bullets. He finished with 24 points, 12 rebounds and three assists on 9/15 shooting along with going 6/7 at the stripe.
Nate Hinton also went 3/6 from beyond the arc for 21 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists with Max Mackinnon contributing 21 points and four rebounds with 5/8 shooting from the outside.
Jacob Holt had some good moments taking the challenge to Magnay in the first half too before ending up with 10 points and four rebounds with Jaylin Williams contributing 10 points, eight boards, four assists and two blocked shots.
Arnas Velička might have missed his first 11 shots, but hit two big ones to give Brisbane a chance in overtime on his way to finishing with 13 assists along with six points and five rebounds.
Lat Mayen also had four points and two rebounds for Brisbane with captain Mitch Norton adding three points and three assists.
Arnas Velička already had three assists and with Max Mackinnon and Nate Hinton scoring six points each, Brisbane were leading 23-17 by quarter-time on the back of forcing Tasmania into seven turnovers.
Brisbane then scored the first five points of the second quarter with a dunk to Jacob Holt and three ball to Hinton to force Scott Roth into a lightning quick timeout.
The lead for the Bullets then got out to as much as 14 points in the second term and the home team were still leading 47-40 going into half-time thanks to 13 points and Tyrell Harrison along with eight points from fellow big man Holt.
The Bullets were clinging to a 59-56 lead midway through the third quarter but the JackJumpers took over the contest from there scoring the next 13 points.
From there, Tasmania went into three quarter-time leading 74-65 on the back of 34 points in the term on 12/19 from the field and 5/8 from downtown to take over the contest.
Tasmania did look in control for much of the fourth quarter until a late 7-0 run from the Bullets had them within two after Harrison scored inside after three offensive rebounds on the possession.
The JackJumpers continued to be ice cold and a dunk from Jaylin Williams before another inside finish to Harrison had the Bullets in front having scored 11 straight points.
Tasmania responded with a behind the back pass from Taran Armstrong to find Bannan under the bucket to tie scores up with 22 seconds left leading to a Will Weaver timeout.
Ultimately Mackinnon's attempted game winner didn’t fall and scores stayed locked 91-91 at the end of regulation before Velička opened overtime with his first bucket of the game after going 0/11 in the opening 40 minutes.
In the end, it was Armstrong who closed the deal with a strong three-point play with 44 seconds to go before the eventual 10-point win.
The Bullets are now back on the road on Thursday night for the first Sunshine Stoush match up of NBL27 against the Cairns Taipans.
