The Brisbane Bullets have signed Matt Johns as a Development Player for the 2022/23 NBL season.
Johns is a 203cm athletic forward, with a strong defensive focus. The 23-year-old played four years of college basketball in the United States at South Dakota and Concordia St Paul, before returning to his hometown to play NBL1 with Geelong this past season.
As a junior, he attended the Centre of Excellence and represented Australia multiple times, including at the U/17 World Championships.
General Manager of Basketball Sam Mackinnon said, “He spent a week up here with the team training and had some wow moments. He has great floor vision and defensively makes good decisions.”
“We hope he can convert this opportunity into a full-time rostered position in the future.”
Hostplus Head Coach James Duncan welcomed Matt to the Bullets.
“Matty came up here and fit into our group perfectly. He surprised us with his athleticism, passing ability and shooting. He showed an eagerness to sit down, guard defensively and rebound,” Duncan said.
“This is the type of player we want to be developing here in Brisbane. I’m excited to have him on board.”
Johns is looking forward to beginning his professional career in Brisbane.
“I’m really excited to be a part of this group. There is a real buzz around practices and the team this year,” Matt said
“All the boys have welcomed me in with open arms and I feel grateful to be a part of this team.”
Matt Johns joins Aron Baynes, Tyler Johnson, Nathan Sobey, Devondrick Walker, Jason Cadee, Tyrrell Harrison, Tanner Krebs, DJ Mitchell, Harry Froling, Kody Stattmann, Gorjok Gak, development player Lual Diing and nominated replacement player Rasmus Bach on the Brisbane Bullets 2022/23 roster.
