The Brisbane Bullets have signed American guard Hunter Maldonado as an injury replacement player for Dakota Mathias, elevating the squad with added versatility and experience for the remainder of the season.
Maldonado arrives in Brisbane following a strong recent stint with the South East Melbourne Phoenix, where he quickly demonstrated his value within the league before being released due to roster composition.
Standing at 6’6”, Maldonado is a versatile combo guard capable of sliding into wing positions, providing size, defensive flexibility and secondary playmaking - attributes that align well with the Bullets’ current needs.
Recently appointed Interim Head Coach Darryl McDonald welcomed the signing, highlighting Maldonado’s adaptability and competitive edge.
“With Dakota sidelined, it was important for us to bring in someone who can step into different roles and compete straight away,” McDonald said.
“Hunter gives us size, versatility and experience at a high level. He’s played in tough leagues, he understands winning environments, and we’re confident he’ll fit in quickly with our group.”
Prior to joining the NBL, Maldonado played with MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in the German Basketball Bundesliga and has previous experience in the NBA G-League with the Oklahoma City Blue, where he claimed a G-League Championship. The 26-year-old also brings a proven collegiate résumé after playing Division I basketball with Wyoming.
Maldonado said he is excited to continue his NBL journey in Brisbane and contribute immediately.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing in the NBL – the physicality, the level of competition, and the passion of the fans make it a special league,” Maldonado said.
“It’s a place where you’re challenged every night, and that’s helped me grow a lot as a player.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue my journey with the Brisbane Bullets and excited for this next chapter. I’m ready to come in, work hard, and do whatever I can to help the team win.”
Maldonado has previously been praised for both his on-court impact and professionalism, earning recognition for his pace, winning pedigree and character throughout his professional career.
The Brisbane Bullets expect Maldonado to be on court once visa clearances are finalised, with processing timelines impacted by the Christmas closure period.
