The Brisbane Bullets are pleased to announce Darryl McDonald will join the Club as a Hostplus Assistant Coach.
McDonald joins the Bullets with a wealth of experience in the NBL both as a player and a coach.
During his illustrious playing career, McDonald won three NBL Championships including one in his first year (1994) with the North Melbourne Giants and two over his last three seasons with the Melbourne Tigers.
Following his playing career, he has dedicated himself to coaching, most recently as an Assistant Coach where he held the role alongside Brisbane Bullets Head Coach Justin Schueller at Melbourne United since 2020. The two were a part of the United coaching staff when the team won the NBL Championship in the 2020/2021 season.
Justin Schueller is delighted to be joined by McDonald and add his knowledge and experience to the coaching ranks.
“D-Mack is one of the best player development coaches I know in our country and with the vision of our program to be a place where players get better, I can’t think of a better person to add to our staff,” Schueller said.
“Having worked with Mack for a number of years, the way he sees the game and his IQ is going to be a great value add for our coaching staff.
“Mac is a winner. He has won as both a player and coach at this level and that’s what we need in this program.
“Having strong relationships with both Greg and Darryl was important to me as we build to turn this program around. I am excited with what we will be able to achieve moving forward,” Schueller added.
McDonald spoke of his excitement to join the Bullets ahead of NBL24.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Brisbane Bullets and to have the opportunity to work with the coaching staff in assisting the team through this exciting new chapter for the Club,” McDonald said.
“The drive and determination for success collaboratively will help develop a positive, vibrant and winning culture that fans will be even more proud to support.
“As Justin previously stated, it’s an exciting time for the Club. We have two Olympian’s (Aron Baynes and Nathan Sobey) on our roster to build around further enhancing the Club’s rich history.
“I can’t wait to get started working with the coaching staff, players and entire Bullets organisation.
“I’m very appreciative of already being welcomed with open arms,” McDonald added.
McDonald will join Head Coach Schueller and Assistant Coach Greg Vanderjagt on the Hostplus coaching staff roster for NBL24.
The Brisbane Bullets organisation would like to thank Peter Crawford for his hard work and commitment to the Club over the last two seasons. The Club also thanks Pero Cameron for his services at the Club in NBL23. We wish them both all the best in their respective coaching journey’s.
