Brisbane Bullets star Robert Franks has revealed a newspaper headline sparked his interest in joining the NBL.
The headline ‘Houston Rockets sign Jae’Sean Tate from the Sydney Kings’ immediately captured Franks’ attention, as he pondered where his career was heading at the end of 2020.
Franks dreamed of success in the NBA, but short-term contracts and stints in the G-League didn't turn out as planned. But Tate’s story provided the perfect motivation to change things up.
Tate had of course worked closely with now Bullets’ coach James Duncan when he was at Sydney as an assistant.“It was all about opportunity having seen a lot of guys have success in the NBL and go back to the NBA,” Franks told News Corp’s Matt Logue.
“That was very enticing for me. The Jae’Sean story joining the Rockets from the NBL just gave me a little thought.”
After a couple of years trying to secure Franks’ signature, Brisbane General Manager of Basketball, Sam Mackinnon, made another play. This time, the 25-year-old was ready to commit.
"(He) really sold that it was a great opportunity for me to showcase my ability and help Brisbane do something special."
Franks has been a revelation in his first season at the Bullets, averaging 21 points, 9.75 rebounds and shooting at 49 per cent from the field.
