Gold Coast Suns AFL star and former US college basketballer Hugh Greenwood has laced up his basketball shoes again, training with the Brisbane Bullets over the past couple of weeks.
Greenwood was a star junior basketballer and played college basketball at New Mexico as well as representing Australia at multiple underage competitions. He signed with the Perth Wildcats in 2015 before switching to AFL, where he has played for the Adelaide Crows and the Suns.
Speaking at the Bullets preseason camp on the Gold Coast, Greenwood said he has enjoyed his training time with Brisbane.
“It’s been a nice change-up, so I appreciate the Bullets for letting me drive up the highway and having a run-around,” Greenwood said.
“It’s been good, it’s been a bit of a reality check, it’s been a few years since I’ve dribbled a basketball, but it’s been good, and it’s been fun.”
Brisbane coach Andrej Lemanis has a past relationship with Greenwood and has appreciated the energy he has brought to training.
“I have a long relationship with Hugh, I coached him at some national junior teams and at the University Games,” Lemanis said.
“It’s nice to reconnect with Hugh, he is obviously trying to keep some fitness during the offseason period for him and it’s great reconnecting on those old relationships. He is a good guy, it’s nice having him in the group and he brings a good energy about practice.”
Lemanis added the week spent on the Gold Coast has helped revitalise the Bullets, who are in the midst of their preseason program.
“We are excited to be down here, we have been practicing in Brisbane for the last six or seven weeks and with the uncertainty around the season, sometimes it’s a little hard to keep the motivation in that environment,” he said.
“Guys have been playing in the QSL on the weekends which has at least given them some game time but we thought we would take the opportunity to change our environment a little bit and come down here with something fresh at the wonderful facilities here at the Gold Coast.”
