The Brisbane Bullets will bring the heat to the Gold Coast this NBL26 season, announcing that two home games will be played at the Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre, marking the first time that regular season Bullets fixtures will be hosted on the coast since the Club’s resurgence in 2017.
Supported by Experience Gold Coast, the games will deliver elite-level basketball to a region with one of the fastest-growing sports communities in the country.
Designed to create marquee moments across the NBL calendar, the two games form part of the NBL’s brand-new Ignite Cup - a midweek competition with results contributing to the regular season as well as a standalone cup.
The tournament will also have a quarter-by-quarter scoring system, with a total prize pool of $400,000.
Brisbane Bullets CEO Mal Watts expects the Gold Coast games to be a milestone moment for the club and stated they are part of a long-term growth plan.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the Bullets and the NBL to take the Ignite Cup to new audiences and deliver top-tier basketball to fans in South East Queensland,” Watts said.
“The Gold Coast has an incredible appetite for live sport and basketball, and we’re thankful to have Experience Gold Coast bring the Ignite Cup to life down there. These games will be loud, competitive and full of Queensland pride.”
The Bullets will square off against the New Zealand Breakers on Wednesday 12 November, before reigniting an iconic rivalry with the Adelaide 36ers on Wednesday 28 January.
The Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre, where both fixtures will be played, has previously hosted international basketball and elite netball fixtures and offers capacity for up to 5,000 fans per game – with 10,000 locals and travelling supporters expected to descend upon the stadium across the two fixtures.
Acting Mayor Mark Hammel believes the announcement is a major win for the region.
“We’re pumped to have the Brisbane Bullets call the Gold Coast home for two rounds of the new Ignite Cup,” he said.
“This is a big win for local basketball fans with 10,000 seats up for grabs across the two games, and a massive boost for our reputation as Australia’s home of sport and major events.
“We love backing winners – and this is another slam dunk for the Gold Coast.”
The Gold Coast rounds will serve as a home-court advantage for the Bullets during the NBL26 season, giving fans in the region the chance to witness some of the country’s best.
