In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, the Brisbane Bullets and TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport have curated a specialised program delivered to senior high school basketball athletes.
Tailored for players who play in a regional, state, or national system, this program will provide the knowledge and skills required to work both as an athlete and in broader sports industry roles such as coaching.
With a focus on basketball, student-athletes will undertake the Certificate II in Sport Coaching (SIS20321) and Certificate III in Sport – Athlete (SIS30421) over two (2) years. Students will undertake regular strength and conditioning, basketball-specific training, and athlete development workshops as part of the program. Sessions are split between theory, and practical hands-on delivery to advance the learning experience.
An exciting aspect of the program is that students will engage with guest speakers and participate in on-court sessions with the Brisbane Bullets coaches and players. Participants will also get a behind-the-scenes experience at an NBL training session and facilitate a basketball activation at a Brisbane Bullets home game.
The program also offers foundation-level basketball coaching accreditation to expand career opportunities on the opposite side of the white line. Prospective students in year 10 or 11 are encouraged to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to pursue their passion for basketball while gaining valuable qualifications and setting themselves on a path to success in the sports industry.
"We're thrilled to embark on an exciting new chapter of partnership, extending a warm welcome to TAFE Queensland as they join the Bullets family through this newly forged collaboration. The program, thoughtfully crafted by the dedicated team at TAFE Queensland, aligns seamlessly with the core vision and values that define the Brisbane Bullets. This alliance propels us forward in our mission to make a lasting and positive impact within our community," expressed Jay McCracken, Head of Community and Development – Brisbane Bullets.
"We are excited to be aligning closely with the Brisbane Bullets to launch our first athlete focused qualification, giving students an insight into the demands of professional sport while also incorporating elements of other careers in the sports industry, including coaching. Our state-of-the-art campus at South Bank has a dedicated basketball facility as well as a fully equipped gym and modern classroom spaces, creating a great learning environment for the student athletes.” said Jesse O’Hara from TAFE Queensland, Registered Training Organisation 0275.
